Athletes

The rate of eating disorders amongst athletes varies depending on a number of factors, including the sport, the level of competition, and general demographics of the individuals. However, it’s known that participation in professional or elite level sports can increase the likelihood of developing an eating disorder.

Some research put the number as high as 84% of college athletes having disordered eating patterns or using extreme measures to control their weight. These college athletes are known to engage in habits such as binge eating, purging, fasting, sticking to strict diets, and using weight loss supplements.

Sports that are more likely to lead to disordered eating include gymnastics, swimming, diving, wrestling, and figure skating, among others. In general, athletes in individual sports are more prone to having an eating disorder.

Find out why athletes may be more prone to developing eating disorders and overexercising. Learn about the treatment options available and how to help an athlete with an eating disorder.
