A recent study has revealed that social media apps, such as Instagram and Facebook, are knowingly creating mental health and body image issues in their younger users, particularly teen girls. Many of these body image issues may develop into eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. This may come as no surprise, given how many social media users curate a “perfect” version of their life that everyone else winds up comparing themselves to. Teen girls on Instagram are constantly bombarded with images of “perfect” bodies. These images are everywhere, from their Instagram feed to advertisements to the Explore page, and they are creating unrealistic and often unattainable ideals. It’s no wonder young users internalize this content, so much so that they struggle with body dissatisfaction, facial dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, among many other issues.
